Structured Workshops.
Lasting Skills.

We currently offer various training workshops for professionals. We offer in-person public and private (in-house) EnergyPlus training workshops. We have trained scores of new users in the intricacies of EnergyPlus in workshops at US and international locations.

Upcoming Workshops

Official Training Workshops

EnergyPlus Workshops

Learn the intricacies of EnergyPlus from the experts behind the software. Our workshops have trained more than 900 new and experienced users through over 100 sessions held across the U.S. and internationally.

OpenStudio Workshops

Gain practical experience using OpenStudio with guidance from our certified instructors. Big Ladder Software is officially licensed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as an authorized OpenStudio training provider.

DesignBuilder Workshops

Develop your modeling skills in DesignBuilder with instruction from our authorized U.S. training team. Big Ladder Software is recognized by DesignBuilder Software (UK) as the official training provider in the United States.

CSE Workshops

Deepen your understanding of the California Simulation Engine used within CBECC-Res. Our workshops explain the structure and logic of the underlying input file to help you design and evaluate residential buildings for code compliance.

We offer public and private training workshops for EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, DesignBuilder, and CSE in both in-person and live webinar formats.

We currently offer the following workshops:

EnergyPlus for Practitioners

A fast-paced, two-day workshop that builds practical skills for creating, running, and debugging EnergyPlus models. Participants learn core concepts through hands-on exercises, covering everything from geometry and loads to HVAC systems, controls, and efficient modeling tools like Euclid for SketchUp.

EnergyPlus EMS Controls

A focused one-day workshop on using the Energy Management System (EMS) in EnergyPlus to create custom control strategies and advanced HVAC sequences. Participants learn the EnergyPlus Runtime Language (Erl), build EMS components, and practice debugging and trend analysis through hands-on exercises.

Modelkit for EnergyPlus

A one-day workshop introducing Big Ladder Software’s Modelkit framework for generating EnergyPlus input files using the Ruby programming language and a library of templates. Participants learn how to link templates, set and pass parameters, and use the Modelkit Excel tool to perform automated parametric simulations and compare results across multiple EnergyPlus models.

OpenStudio Launch Pad

A one-day workshop designed to get you up and running quickly with the OpenStudio graphical interface for EnergyPlus. Participants learn how to create and edit geometry in SketchUp, manage space types and internal loads, and configure HVAC systems and controls through guided demonstrations and hands-on exercises.

Advanced OpenStudio

A one-day workshop exploring advanced modeling techniques in the OpenStudio interface. Participants learn to add custom library data, model bulk air flow, configure advanced plant systems, debug energy models, and account for thermal bridging through detailed demonstrations and hands-on exercises.

DesignBuilder Simulation Training

A five-day modular course designed to deepen your knowledge of DesignBuilder using version 5 of the software. Suitable for both new and experienced users, this workshop emphasizes hands-on learning through worked examples to help you master simulation workflows without requiring prior EnergyPlus experience.

Using DesignBuilder for LEED

A two-day workshop focused on using DesignBuilder to streamline building performance modeling and LEED certification workflows. Participants learn key modeling techniques from early to detailed project stages using the latest software features, including ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G automation, daylighting analysis with DAYSIM, and online LEED reporting tools.

Using DesignBuilder to Maximize EnergyPlus Productivity

A one-day workshop demonstrating how DesignBuilder can accelerate EnergyPlus model creation and simulation. Participants learn efficient geometry and data management techniques, explore exporting and editing IDF files, and are introduced to the DesignBuilder EMS for customizing HVAC, lighting, and ventilation system behavior.

CBECC-Res: Under the Hood

A two-day workshop that delves into the California Simulation Engine (CSE), the core of CBECC-Res, to help energy modelers understand and extend residential compliance analysis in California. Participants learn to adjust simulations, explore HVAC and DHW systems, interpret CSE input files, and develop the skills needed to create, run, and debug CSE models beyond compliance applications.

A Training Philosophy for Complicated Software

Building energy modeling is a complex field which relies on complicated engineering software that is often difficult to learn. That’s why we have created our own unique philosophy for training
Hands-On Exercises

Most of the real learning happens when you try to use the software yourself. Our workshops are approximately 50% lectures and 50% exercises. The step-by-step exercises begin to build the “muscle memory” that helps you to retain your new skills for long-term use.

Mental Models

Our workshops help you construct "mental models" to organize all of the relevant information and make it easier to learn. We provide the structures, patterns, and best practices that bring order to the chaos.

Resources

Even experts don’t keep everything in their head at once. The most important skill we can teach you is how to teach yourself going forward–how to use the available resources to find the information you need after the workshop ends.
